Marine Protected Areas in the Philippines

This is a map of the marine protected areas identified in the Philippines. A total of 632 MPAs covering the vast marine environement in the country. These places serves as protection sites for fish, sea grass, mangroves, algae to breed and grow in order to support several various ecosystems in the planet. Even as a kid I have already had this sheer amazement for the ocean. I could remember when I was 8 that my dad usually takes me to various places in the country for his work and how I was amazed how one beach was different from another. I also loved books that had fishes and whales and I would read them again and again just to appreciate the beauty of the oceans. When I was able work in remote areas (specifically island communities), it opened my eyes to how dependent several families were to the bounty of the sea. How they would wake up very early in morning to catch fish and bring it to shore by noon. Through my journey in MS1 I was able to understand things deeper and have a wider appreciation with how everythings is well knit and connected to one another. The ocean, as massive as it is, serves so many purpose in maintaining balance in our lives. From how it controls the weather, to the currents, winds, typhoons, to thermal circulation - these are just some things that we know that directly affects our daily activities. On the other hand you can also see it as a habitat for several species of animals, plants, planktons, algaes, corals and many others. These are the things we usually take for granted which we don't consider. But little as we know, the disruption of this chained networks can affect us dramatically in the future. Our activities as man that destroy these ecosystems affect this network and sooner it would be the one destroying it. From overfishing, mining, to coastal degradation, overpopulation, garbage disposal, and climate change - are just some things that we do and is a normal part of our activtiies and yet we don't give attention to the definite impacts to our seas and oceans. In my field of geography, I use maps to represent reality - the status of how bad the situations are. And primarily my advocacies are fueled by my knowledge of things. I appreciate the lessons and eye opener videos in this subject and I would like to emphasize the importance of looking at things at the widest picture. We are bounded by territories and this shouldnt be the approach we need to use to solve the largest portion of our planet. But we need to start somewhere. We need to be there for the ocean as it through time has always been there for us.
