Status: COMPLETE (Reworked June 2023)
Introduction
This map shows S.T. Gill's paintings of Port Adelaide along with select contemporary pictures by other artists.
This part of the river is labelled Hindmarsh Reach on this historical map but it is better known as Gawler Reach. A 1911 map "Port Adelaide wharves and water frontages" SLSA C 314/1
https://collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/resource/C+314/1 shows the central area as Gawler Reach with Hindmarsh Reach to the north and Old Port Reach to the south.
To understand the context of these pictures and this map, and read the argument for Gill's authorship of Angas' "South Australia Illustrated" plate, see my article:
S.T. Gill's Port Adelaide.
