From its early beginnings, the Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration (French National Museum of the History of Immigration) has been inspired by similar initiatives at the international level. First attempts to create an international network on migration, or more specifically of migration museums, have notably been conducted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UNESCO and the Association of European Migration Institutions (AEMI).
Since 2019, the Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration has been taking part in the Migration Museums Network, a new project aiming to establish and develop an international network of migration museums. Coordinated by the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, this network brings together more than twenty institutions throughout the world.
In addition to this international network, many heritage institutions also work on issues related to the history and memory of migration.
This map attempts to identify (in a non-comprehensive way) these institutions that tell the story of a world of perpetual human mobility and connections.
